Okay, friend, let’s chat about this chocolate milk situation. You know how it is, right? You offer your sweet little angels a glass of water, and their eyes just glaze over. But mention a sugary drink? Suddenly, they’re all ears! It’s a battle sometimes, and honestly, mama, sometimes you just gotta pick your battles. That’s how this “shameless” sugar-free healthy chocolate milk recipe was born in my kitchen. Necessity, pure and simple.
Jump to Recipe Print RecipeWe’re lucky enough to have access to raw milk, and I wanted a way for the kids to feel like they were getting a special treat without all the junk that comes in those store-bought cartons. And you know what? It totally works! It’s a win-win: they get their “great treat,” and I know they’re getting something made with real ingredients.
Let’s talk about what goes into this healthy homemade chocolate milk, because honestly, it couldn’t be simpler. You probably have most of the stuff in your pantry already.

Healthy Chocolate Milk Ingredients
The beauty of this whole thing is that it’s so darn easy. We’re talking simple ingredients.
Now, salt. We’re big fans of Redmond’s around here, and I buy it in bulk because we use it for everything. But honestly, don’t sweat it. Sea salt, Celtic salt, even plain old table salt will do the trick. It just helps to bring out the chocolate flavor a little bit.
And then there’s the unsweetened cocoa powder. Now, I’ve found that raw cacao powder or Dutch Pressed real cocoa powder just has this richer, deeper chocolate flavor that we all love. To me, it’s a step up from your regular Hershey’s. Just make sure you’re grabbing the unsweetened kind, okay? We’re controlling the sweetness ourselves!
Sugar Free Option (and Beyond!)
Okay, so this part always makes me chuckle. My daughter, bless her heart, is my little photography assistant sometimes. When she saw me getting all the ingredients out for this, she gave me this dramatic eye roll and goes, “Not Stevia.” Ha! The funny thing is, I usually do make it with Stevia, and she never complains!
But get this – after I made the batch I photographed (which was with Stevia), she took a sip and her eyes went wide. “Wow, Mom,” she said, “this tastes better than the grocery store stuff!” Made my mama heart happy, let me tell you.
But listen, don’t let the “sugar-free” part intimidate you. If you don’t have Stevia on hand, no biggie! Seriously. We’ve made this with all sorts of sweeteners, whatever we had in the cupboard. Coconut sugar gives it a little bit of a different flavor, sucanat and organic cane sugar work great, good old granulated sugar is fine, and even brown sugar adds a nice little touch. The point is, use what you’ve got and adjust the added sugar as you deem necessary!
Milk of Choice – You Do You!
Alright, now for the liquid gold – the milk! We are definitely in the raw milk camp around here. We love it unpasteurized and unhomogenized. But hey, I get it. Not everyone has access to that, or maybe you’re just more comfortable with other options. And that’s totally fine!
If goat milk is your jam, go for it! Prefer pasteurized milk? Absolutely! And for all my dairy-free mamas out there, this recipe works like a charm with non-dairy milks! Oat milk, cashew milk, soy milk, almond milk, and even coconut milk can be used with this easy recipe. Seriously, the kind of milk is totally up to you and what works for your family.
Directions – Keep it Simple, Mama!
Okay, listen to this because this is where the “easy” part really shines. To cut down on dishes (because who needs more dishes, am I right?), I just dump all the dry ingredients straight into a wide-mouth quart Mason jar. That way, it’s the mixing bowl and the storage container. Genius, if I do say so myself!
Here’s the super complicated method: Alternate the layers. Cocoa powder, then your Stevia (or whatever sweetener you’re using), and finally the salt. Then, grab a whisk or even just a fork and stir it all up really well. Pop a lid on and give it a good shake for added measure. When I’m using Stevia, this amount of chocolate milk powder fits perfectly into a quart jar. If you’re using sugar, you might need a large mason jar or airtight container, just FYI.

Making the Chocolate Milk – The Grand Finale!
Alright, the moment of truth! When the chocolate milk craving hits, I usually grab a half-gallon jar of our raw milk and skim a little bit of the cream off the top. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, it gives me a little more room in the jar for mixing. Second, hello, free butter or coffee creamer! But you absolutely don’t have to skim the cream. Just make sure you have enough space in your jar or pitcher to easily mix everything.
Now, for a half-gallon of milk, we use about 1/4 cup of that amazing chocolate powder we just made. Just dump it right into the wide-mouth milk jar. To get it all smooth and incorporated we’ve had the best result with an immersion blender. Seriously, if you don’t have one, they’re a game-changer! But if you don’t have one, no worries. You can just mix a smaller portion of the milk with the dry powder in a regular high speed blender until it’s smooth, and then pour that into the remaining milk and stir it all together. Easy peasy!
Shameless and Easy – That’s the Motto!
So there you have it, friend! My go-to, no-fuss, “shameless” sugar-free healthy chocolate milk recipe. No need for hot water or to heat up anything in a small saucepan, which is a huge win in my book. It literally takes less than a minute to have a cold, delicious glass of chocolate milk ready to go. So go ahead, serve it up to your family, and don’t forget to pour yourself a cup of chocolate milk too. You deserve it! Enjoy!

That’s a great idea, Alisha. I haven’t added protein powder to the chocolate milk before, but we do in smoothies. I’ll give that a try!
