  1. I found this information to be extremely helpful! Your supplement of 50:50 sweet feed and alphafa pellets, is that fed with your COB ration or in place of it? If fed alongside, what is the ratio to your COB ration? When adding BOSS, how much are you giving per day?

    1. Hi Alison,
I use a bagged sweet feed that can be fed to multiple species. Some people are fans of COB, but my Jersey can not tolerate it. I no longer feed COB and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it. The oats and barley mixture can be at a higher percentage than ruminants can handle and can cause major digestion issues. I know COB is popular for homesteaders, but it’s not something I suggest any longer, just based on our personal experience.
Each cow can handle BOSS differently, too. I’d start with a 1/4 cup or so and gradually increase. Our latest jersey is a small girl, 800 ish lbs, and the max I’d give her per feeding is probably around 1 cup. That being said, a larger cow could probably handle more. My girl is just a delicate thing and has had digestion issues so I’m very careful on what we give her.
